The Eleventh Hour: A Caring Guideline for the Hours to Minutes Before Death
The Eleventh Hour is the companion booklet to Gone From My Sight: The Dying Experience. While Gone describes the dying process, The Eleventh Hour gives ideas for what to do, and say as well as how to care for the person who is approaching death.
Agencies/hospices put these two booklets together in their initial family packets to inform families on the stages of death and how to care for a loved one who is dying. These booklets meet Medicare requirements for consistent family education and have been shown to significantly improve CAHPS scores and family survey results.
The Eleventh Hour is a booklet that offers information, ideas and support for caregivers in the weeks, days, and hours before death and just after. Having this information inspires and empowers the caregiver while reducing fear.
The Eleventh Hour is used for volunteer training in Transitional, Vigil and No One Dies Alone programs, for hospitals, for nursing facilities, parish nursing and Hospice and Palliative Care agencies. Most of all, it is for families faced with caring for their loved one at end of life.
Like all of Barbara's booklets, The Eleventh Hour is written in large print and the information is conveyed in a simple, direct yet gentle manner.
This booklet is included in the End of Life Guideline Series.

As Good As the "Hospice Bluebook" -- The Eleventh Hour
We give the blue book and the pink book to our patients and their families as they navigate hospice with their loved ones. It's a great educational tool for them to use as we walk the journey with them and help educate them about what's happening to their loved one. I also give out the books to my volunteers-- especially vigil volunteers. It's such a helpful guide.

Hi Melanie, you've described exactly how I see my booklets being used. Supplement Pain At End of Life and How Do I Know You? (dementia) when appropriate. Blessings to you and all your EOL helpers. Barbara
Great

Sara, I love it that you are giving The Eleventh Hour to your families. I wrote it as a companion to Gone From My Sight but it often gets sidelined. It is such an important resource for families. Blessings to you and all at Gateway Home in the work you are doing. Barbara
Excellent resource
Having recently experienced Hospice for the first time I found this an invaluable resource. I kept it handy to explain to friends and family that wht my sister was experiencing was completely normal. It was part of her journey. It was a great comfort to all of us!
